The science behind synbiotic cleaning

When the product is diluted and applied, prebiotics activate the probiotics on the surface. The probiotics then continue producing enzymes over time, breaking down organic residues left behind after wiping or mopping. Unlike cleaners that rely only on added enzymes, this ongoing enzyme production supports continued cleaning between applications.

Are HeiQ Synbio detergents suitable for everyday cleaning?
Don’t see the answer you’re looking for?Explore HeiQIn cleaning detergents, synbiotics are a combination of probiotics and prebiotics. Probiotics produce enzymes that support the breakdown of organic soils over time. Prebiotics act as a starter nutrient that activates probiotics during use.
Conventional detergents mainly clean through chemical action during application. Synbiotic detergents add a biological cleaning process that can continue after application.
Yes. HeiQ Synbio detergents are designed for use on washable surfaces. They support ongoing organic soil and odor management as part of surface care.

Success story: Trauma cleaning with synbiotics in Japan
Kai Corporation, a Japan-based provider of odor control solutions, started out with synbiotic cleaning by introducing it into specialized trauma cleaning services for kodokushi (lonely death) rooms.View success storyHeiQ partner Kai Corporation, a Japan-based provider of odor control solutions, introduced synbiotic cleaning into specialized trauma cleaning services for kodokushi (lonely death) rooms, where unattended deaths often lead to deeply embedded and persistent odors. Initially, odor control relied mainly on ozone machines, which typically required about a week of treatment and did not always prevent odors from returning from walls, fine cracks, or drain systems. Seeking a more effective approach, Kai Corporation integrated synbiotic cleaning products into these workflows around 2017.
Cleaning teams observed noticeably faster odor reduction, often within two days, compared with ozone-only processes, and odors were fully eliminated. Feedback from cleaning providers and residents indicated reduced odor persistence and no more odor-related complaints in surrounding areas. Synbiotic cleaning proved effective at reaching odor sources that were difficult to access with conventional treatments.
As Riichiro Hosogai, President of Kai Corporation, explains: “In trauma cleaning, speed and reliability matter. By adding synbiotic cleaning to our processes, we were able to address odors more deeply and support cleaning professionals working in extremely challenging situations.”
This experience became a foundation for Kai Corporation’s broader adoption of synbiotic cleaning technologies across professional and consumer applications in Japan. -

News: HeiQ launches synbiotic dishwasher detergent that works beyond the wash cycle
HeiQ introduces its new HeiQ Synbio Dishwasher Detergent, a synbiotic dishwasher detergent that combines probiotics, prebiotics, and surfactants to support cleaning during and beyond the wash cycle, at SEPAWA Congress 2026 in Berlin.Read moreHeiQ introduces its new HeiQ Synbio Dishwasher Detergent, a synbiotic dishwasher detergent that combines probiotics, prebiotics, and surfactants to support cleaning during and beyond the wash cycle, at SEPAWA Congress 2026 in Berlin.
As interest in microbial cleaning technologies continues to expand across home care categories, HeiQ is extending its synbiotic technology platform into dishwashing. Unlike conventional dishwasher detergents that act primarily during the wash cycle, HeiQ Synbio Dishwasher Detergent supports the ongoing breakdown of organic residues in filters, drains, and other internal machine areas after the program has finished. Synbiotics combine beneficial microorganisms with nutrients to kickstart their activity, helping the microorganisms produce enzymes that break down food residues. The formulation supplements conventional cleaning chemistry with biological actives that continue supporting the breakdown of organic residues after the wash cycle has finished.
The product demonstrated strong cleaning performance across common food soils, including protein-, starch-, milk-, and fat-based residues in controlled dishwasher testing. It contains a minimum of 50 million probiotics per milliliter and is available in 750 mL and 1 L formats.
"Consumers expect a dishwasher detergent to leave their dishes clean. With HeiQ Synbio Dishwasher Detergent, we wanted to add another practical benefit for the home by supporting cleaner filters, drains, and internal machine areas over time," said Dr. Robin Temmerman, a microbiologist with a PhD in probiotics, who serves as Executive Vice President Life Sciences at HeiQ and General Manager of HeiQ Chrisal in Belgium. “We live alongside microorganisms every day, and many of them perform useful functions. By working with their natural activity, we can support a more balanced home environment.”
Dr. Robin Temmerman will present "Microbial dishwashing: Extending performance beyond the wash cycle with synbiotics" on 14 October 2026 from 09:15 to 09:30 in Room 1 at the SEPAWA Congress.
Visitors can meet the HeiQ team at SEPAWA Congress at booth D501-503 in Convention Hall II throughout the event.
